๐ “You shall not do as they do…” – Leviticus 18:3
๐ “Do not be like them…” – Matthew 6:8
There’s a powerful thread that runs through Scripture—one that connects God’s instructions to Israel in the wilderness with Jesus’ teachings in the Gospels. It’s the call to be different. Set apart. Holy. And it often begins with a simple warning:
“Don’t be like them.”
In the Old Testament, when God led His people out of Egypt and into the wilderness, preparing them for the Promised Land, He gave clear instructions. They weren’t just told what to do—they were told who not to become.
“You shall not do as they do in the land of Egypt... and you shall not do as they do in the land of Canaan.” (Lev. 18:3)
God warned them not to copy the practices, customs, or worship of the nations around them. He was forming a new kind of people—people who would reflect His nature, His justice, and His mercy.
✨ Then Comes Jesus...
Fast-forward to the New Testament, and the warning still echoes. But this time, the people Jesus tells us not to be like… aren’t pagans. They’re the religious elite.
-
Don’t pray like them—just to be seen by others (Matt. 6:5)
-
Don’t fast like them—with gloomy faces to look spiritual (Matt. 6:16)
-
Don’t give like them—to show off your generosity (Matt. 6:2)
It’s ironic, isn’t it?
In the wilderness, God said, “Don’t be like the nations.”
In the Gospels, Jesus says, “Don’t be like the religious.”
๐ A Call to Authenticity
Jesus wasn’t attacking spirituality—He was calling us back to its true purpose.
He reminds us that the Kingdom of God is not about performance or appearances. It’s not about empty rituals or public approval. It’s about the heart.
“Your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” (Matt. 6)
Where religion seeks platform, the Kingdom seeks presence.
Where religion points outward, the Kingdom points inward.
Where religion says “try harder,” Jesus says “abide in Me.”
๐พ Through the Wilderness, With the Word
Even deeper still: Jesus didn’t just preach this message—He lived it.
In Matthew 4, Jesus is led into the wilderness by the Spirit, fasting for 40 days. It mirrors Israel’s 40 years. The enemy tempts Him with bread, and Jesus responds with words from Deuteronomy:
“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” (Matt. 4:4)
The same wilderness.
The same Word.
But this time—obedience instead of rebellion.
Victory instead of failure.
Jesus walked where Israel walked—and where we walk too. But unlike us, He didn’t fall. He is the better Israel, the better example, and the perfect fulfillment of the “Don’t be like them” command.
❤️ The Good News
The message of the Gospel isn’t: “Do better.”
The message is: “Jesus is better.”
And through Him, we’re not just called to be different—we’re empowered to be.
He is the Word that came from the mouth of God.
He is the Bread that truly satisfies.
He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
๐ฟ Final Encouragement
In a world full of comparison and performance, don’t feel the pressure to blend in—or to live up to religious expectations.
Walk with Jesus.
Listen for His voice.
Live from His Word.
Let Him lead you, even in the wilderness.
Because the One who said “Don’t be like them”
also said “Follow Me.”
