There are seasons in life when we look around and realize how empty or broken certain areas have become. We see places in our story that feel ruined, repetitive, devoured, or dried up. We carry heartbreak that lingers, cycles that don’t break, expectations that haven’t manifested, and disappointments we don’t talk about.
Many of us know what it feels like to sit in a place that looks hopeless.
And yet, in Ezekiel 36, God steps into a people whose lives were in that same condition — desolate, scattered, and devoured — and He reveals something astonishing:
He restores not because of who we are,
but because of who He is.
And when we understand His Name, we begin to understand His intention toward us.
🌑 The Conditions That Profaned His Name
In Ezekiel 36, God explains that His Name was being profaned among the nations — not because the people were intentionally dishonoring Him, but because their condition was lying about Him.
God said:
“When they came to the nations…
they profaned My holy Name,
when it was said of them,
‘These are the people of the LORD,
yet they have gone out of His land.’”
— Ezekiel 36:20
In other words:
Their bondage misrepresented His freedom.
Their desolation misrepresented His abundance.
Their defeat misrepresented His victory.
Their brokenness misrepresented His goodness.
Their ruin misrepresented His promise.
Their shame misrepresented His covenant love.
The nations looked at the condition of God’s people
and assumed that’s what their God must be like.
This is why God said He could no longer remain silent.
Their state said something false about Him.
And because His Name matters,
our condition matters to Him.
💛 His Thoughts Toward Us Are Peace, Not Evil
When God finally speaks into the devastation,
He doesn’t shame the people.
He doesn’t say, “Look what you’ve done.”
He says:
“I do not do this for your sakes,
but for My holy Name’s sake…”
— Ezekiel 36:22
That statement is not distance.
It’s a guarantee.
It means:
“My intention to restore you is anchored
in something greater than your failures —
it’s anchored in My character.”
This is the same Name He proclaimed in Exodus 34:6:
merciful
gracious
slow to anger
abundant in goodness
overflowing with steadfast love
faithful to generations
These are His thoughts toward us —
thoughts of peace,
not of evil,
to give us an expected end.
✝️ The Prophetic Fix — Jesus Christ and Him Crucified
Every promise in Ezekiel 36 finds its fulfillment in Christ.
Ezekiel said God would:
cleanse us with clean water
give us a new heart
put a new spirit within us
remove the stony heart
give us a heart of flesh
cause us to walk in His ways
That is Jesus Christ and Him crucified.
The cross is the moment God protected His Name
and healed our condition.
The resurrection is the moment He guaranteed
that desolation would not have the last word.
When Christ entered our story,
He didn’t just forgive our sin —
He restored our capacity to live.
🌱 The Full Restoration — God’s Personal Promise
These are God’s direct words to us as His people:
“I will take you from among the nations…”
“I will gather you into your own land…”
“I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean…”
“I will give you a new heart…”
“I will put My Spirit within you…”
“I will multiply the fruit of the trees…”
“I will rebuild the ruined places…”
“I will cause you to dwell in the cities…”
“I will increase men like a holy flock…”
“The land that was desolate
has become like the garden of Eden.”
This is not small restoration.
This is:
rebuilding ruined cities
healing devastated places
multiplying what was barren
restoring dignity
reversing shame
bringing fruitfulness to wastelands
settling us securely
making us like Eden
This is God saying:
“Where you were devastated,
I will make you flourish.”
🙌 The Invitation — “Enquire of Me to Do This for You”
Then God says something remarkable:
“I will yet be enquired of
by the house of Israel,
to do it for them.”
— Ezekiel 36:37
He invites us to ask Him
for the very thing
He already promised.
This doesn’t show reluctance —
it shows relationship.
We enquire because:
we agree with His promise
we align our hearts with His desire
we prepare for what He said
we eagerly expect what He intends to do
God is literally saying:
“Ask Me to fulfill what My Name requires.”
Our expectation is not arrogance.
It is obedience.
Our hope is not fantasy.
It is faith.
Our preparation is not presumption.
It is partnership.
